Mid January happenings...

Thursday, 14 January 2010
Well we're definitely getting some interesting weather this week...
Lots of rain, but powder up top. Kind of like the best of both worlds between spring skiing and thick powder. Spoiled brats may say otherwise, but we've been having tons of fun!! And the best part is, there's no one around right now, so no line ups... amazing!!! With only 29 days to go before the Olympics, we're calling it the calm before the storm...

Also, here are some amazing new shots from Paul Morrison, from his entry for the Deep Winter comp that just took place last week here in Whistler. To see the whole slide show, go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Up8IZIxbMcU&feature=related

Adventures to the BAJA!

Friday, 13 November 2009
Hey!

Well I definitely went from the hot dry desert to the cold snowy mountains in a hurry! Here is my story on my trip to the Baja....
Thanks again for all of your support! Bikes, Beach, Burritos…..Baja.

Mountain Biking in Whistler during the fall months is the locals favorite time of year. The trails are quiet and the dirt is good. But there comes a time, and it varies every year, when Whistler wants to turn into the Great White North. Just before that happened, I was invited on a photo trip to Baja, Mexico.

The guys from Solosports Adventure Holidays had been in contact with Ian Hylands about doing some promotional pieces about their luxury camp style resort in Punta San Carlos. He needed a few riders to come down and capture the magic of the area and, along with Randy Spangler and Josh Bender, I ended up being one of those riders. Lucky me! (Even luckier was that one of my most fun friends, Lauren, came down for the hell of it so I wasn’t stuck with a bunch of stinky boys!)

A typical day in the Baja went a little like this:

-wake up just before sunrise
-tea
-laugh
-hit the trails and shoot photos in the morning light
-look in awe at the peachy glow of sunrise over the unique landscape and ocean!!!!!
-most amazing huevos rancheros ever!
-lie in the sun
-laugh
-draw in my sketchbook
-go for a quick surf, or try anyways….
-burritos for lunch yum yum
-back to the trails for more riding, scoping or shooting
-hot shower
-amazing dinner, fresh local crab perhaps?
-hang out at the bar and enjoy a Baja Fog with friends
-laugh
-check out the amazing sunset and stars
-retire to the comfy tent
-fall asleep to the sound of crashing waves

Um yeah…..as I said, lucky me!

I would recommend this trip as a mountain bike destination to anyone.

They have a super fun XC trail network to keep you entertained for days(the kind of trails that are so fun you don’t even notice you’re getting a workout) and so much potential for growth! You can head to the “Badlands” where you can get creative and play around on various hips, drops and wallrides. Or if you’re more hardcore you can explore the surrounding Mesas and hit up some big mountain riding. And if you like hucking, by all means, go for it! They are also planning to install a pumptrack, I think I’ll have to head back down for that asap!

Or if you’re just not up for riding that day, go play in the waves with one of the following: surf board, boogie board, paddle board, kite board, windsurfer. Take your pick.

Or learn about the cultural history of the area by one of the knowledgeable staff, like the ancient burial grounds nearby. Go check out some petroglyths. Let your inner nerd come out!

Hang out at the al fresco bar, the package they offer includes beverages so don’t go overboard….!

One things for sure, you can always look forward to fresh authentic Mexican food prepared by real life Mexicans. Yes folks, the real deal. Yuuuuuuuummmmmmm.

All I know is we had an amazing time. One of those trips you struggle to put into words that justify the experience. And Hylands, of course, captured it. Look out for his amazing images and more stories both online and on the magazine stands in the near future. Or, just go experience it yourself. Like their motto states, “You Just Don’t Know Until You Go”.

It’s true.

THE SNOW IS SICK RIGHT NOW!

The snow has been amazing over the past 2 weeks!! Finally!! J9 finally went up the hill. Sara toured Little Spearhead yesterday and the report was "Best snow of the year!" The snow is still cold - especially in the shade! I spoke to some buddies who dropped Currie yesterday too! The report: "Sick!" Looks like the snow WILL be around for the Ski and Snowboard Festival!
